Phong Nha Tour Options (Other Than Caving)

Caves steal the spotlight, but there’s so much more to Phong Nha tours than these underground masterpieces. Come for the caves, stay for the thrills!

This epic naturally-formed adventure playground isn’t just for those wanting to get underground. Like the jungle? Pull on your hiking boots and tackle this immense green beast. Prefer the feeling of the wind rushing through your hair? Hop on a bicycle or a motorbike for some insane views. And if you want to take to the water, there’s always kayaking through the unmatched serenity.

Phong Nha is Asia’s next big adventure destination – discover it now before the crowds do.

Phong Nha Tours: Hiking

Now, treks and hikes within Phong Nha are hardly a walk in the park. This is an area of undiscovered, dense jungle foliage, peppered with unexploded landmines (more on that later).

But what’s an adventure without a bit of danger? If you didn’t nearly die, did you even have fun?

Seriously though, due to these warnings, it’s highly recommended that you trek with a guide who knows the area. Phong Nha is ideal for any hiker with moderate experience looking to take their adventure to the next level. Our experts cater to even the most inexperienced adventurers though, so don’t panic.

For those eager to see a bit of history, this unspoiled tropical forest was a focal point in the American War. You can hike through the original Ho Chi Minh Trail to the Abandoned Valley in the heart of the National Park. There are pristine waters to dive into, along with diverse ecological life and scrambles up rocky cliffs.

Jungle Boss offers a couple of options in the way of strenuous, sweaty danger walks. Thrill-seekers need to check out the Abandoned Valley Trek and Elephant Cave & Ma Da valley Jungle Trek. See more of Vietnam than most dare to, only with Jungle Boss.

A word of warning before you go: there are still a bunch of mines hanging out around Phong Nha… so try not to wander off.

Phong Nha Tours: Cycling

Cycling around Phong Nha is an absolute must if you want to do more than diving in and out of the caves.

You won’t want one of those rickety upright bikes you’ve seen the locals riding around on, though. These roads are muddy, they dip, they dive, so set yourself up with a nice reliable mountain bike.

The best place to go for a bike tour in the local area has to be Bong Lai Valley. Phong Nha tours can be calm too – winding back roads, picturesque villages, and sleepy rivers await. Bong Lai Valley offers a fantastic mix of authentic culture and stunning scenery.

The start of this winding road runs south of Ho Chi Minh Highway East, around six kilometres east of town. From here you’ll be able to plot a path through various charming destinations that have cropped up over the years.

Make sure you visit the almost famous Duck Stop for a chance to ride ‘Donald Trump’, eat famous banh xeo, and get a massage from ducks. Yes, ducks.

If a further cycle ride has replenished your appetite, look out for the very well-signposted Pub with Cold Beer. All the food at this watering hole is grown in the village, with a farm to table motto so prevalent that the speciality, grilled chicken, will be pecking at your ankles before arriving on your plate.

Alternatively, continue down the valley and enjoy a nice relaxing drink at the rustic Wild Boar Eco Farm, where they also have cold beer, but have gone totally left of field with a speciality of pork instead of chicken.

Either way, you can reward yourself with a refreshingly cold beer after all that cycling.

Phong Nha Tours: Motorbiking

While motorbikes are the go-to mode of transport for much of Vietnam, if you’re new to the country and haven’t been on a bike before, it may be best to stick to the kind without motors.

We don’t want to be spoil-sports, but Phong Nha just isn’t very well signposted and the number of travellers seriously injuring themselves by riding around on motorbikes in the area increases every year. We want you and future travellers to enjoy yourself on our Phong Nha tours, without breaking any bones.

If we’ve sufficiently deterred you from bike-life, but you really don’t like cardiovascular exercise, you can always book a tour with Thang’s Phong Nha Riders. These guys will take you on an unforgettable trip, guided with expert insider knowledge, and all for the low, low price of 400,000vnd.

If you’re still feeling brave, however, then you’ll find a totally different form of adventure on your motorised two-wheel transportation. Rapid travel, the rush of the wind, and a mind-blowing view makes motorbike the primary mode of transport for experienced adventurers. Take the same route as outlined above, and as any great adventurer would, get off the beaten path.

Phong Nha Tours: Kayaking

Had enough of humans? Want to get truly off the grid? Try taking a kayaking tour through the sleepy rivers and into the mouth of some of Phong Nha’s deep watery caves. This alternative offers a rugged, adventurous approach, along with different thrilling activities, like swimming and zip-lining in a barely discovered part of Vietnam.
